Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font Arrives in New Delhi for His First State Visit to India
Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font landed in New Delhi on March 31, marking the beginning of his first-ever state visit to India. The visit, scheduled from April 1 to 5, aims to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Chile. According to official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, President Boric was accorded a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour upon his arrival. Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita received him at the airport, welcoming him warmly to India.
President Boric’s visit follows an invitation extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offering both countries an opportunity to discuss economic cooperation, trade, and global issues of mutual interest. The Chilean delegation accompanying the President includes government officials, members of parliament, senior officials, business representatives, media, and key figures engaged in India-Chile cultural exchanges.
In his post on social media, President Boric expressed his excitement about the visit, stating, “6:30 a.m. in New Delhi, and from here, we begin this State Visit to India, a momentous occasion for strengthening and diversifying our economic, political, and cultural relations at a time when multilateral cooperation is more necessary than ever.” He emphasized the significance of the visit, highlighting the potential for growth in key areas such as agribusiness, innovation, and creative industries.
During his stay, President Boric will travel to Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, engaging with political leaders, business representatives, startups, and innovators. His meetings will focus on expanding trade, investment, and technological cooperation between the two nations. Chile, a key partner for India in Latin America, shares strong economic and diplomatic ties, particularly in sectors like renewable energy and climate change.
India and Chile have maintained warm relations over the years, with Chile being the only Latin American country to send a special envoy to India’s Independence Day celebrations in 1947. Both countries collaborate extensively in multilateral forums and have consistently supported each other on issues such as UN Security Council reforms and counterterrorism. Chile has reiterated its endorsement of India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC since 2003.
The visit by President Boric is significant, as it holds the potential for increased cooperation and growth between the two nations. With their shared values and interests, India and Chile are poised to strengthen their partnership, exploring new avenues for collaboration and mutual benefit.
