Tawang Celebrates Sustainable Festivity with Zero-Waste Gorsam Kora Festival Concluded

The three-day Gorsam Kora Festival, a celebration of the deep-rooted friendship between India and Bhutan, has concluded on March 29 in Zemithang, Tawang district, with a powerful message: “A Festival Without Waste & Plastic.” Spearheaded by Lungla MLA Tsering Lhamu, the festival was a resounding success, showcasing the importance of sustainable celebrations.

The event, which has been held annually at the historic Gorsam Chorten, a 93-foot-tall stupa dating back to the 13th century, was a significant occasion for the Himalayan Buddhist community. The stupa, similar to Nepal’s Boudhanath Stupa and Bhutan’s Chorten Kora, built in 1740, is a revered site for pilgrims and monks from Bhutan, Nepal, Dirang, Tawang, and neighboring regions.

This year’s festival saw the participation of approximately 40 Bhutanese civilians, who attended not only to pay their respects to the stupa but also to leverage the occasion for cross-border trade and cultural exchange. The Indian Army, local cultural troupes, and monks from Bhutan and Nepal added to the festival’s vibrancy with captivating performances, including traditional Buddhist chanting and rituals, cultural dance performances, martial arts showcases, and musical performances by Indian Army bands.

Beyond the entertainment, the festival also emphasized community welfare, with initiatives like free medical camps benefiting the local population. The focus on community development was a testament to the festival’s commitment to making a positive impact on the region. Under the leadership of MLA Tsering Lhamu, the event’s eco-conscious approach was evident, with a dedicated clean-up drive ensuring that the festival left behind no environmental footprint.

The festival’s success was largely due to the collaborative effort between the Indian Army, local authorities, and volunteers, who worked together to make the event a reality. The message “A Festival Without Waste & Plastic” was a significant departure from traditional festival practices, and the event’s organizers should be commended for their innovative approach to event planning.

As we move forward, it’s heartening to see festivals taking a proactive stance on sustainability and reducing their environmental impact. The Gorsam Kora Festival’s commitment to being a “Festival Without Waste & Plastic” sets a strong example for future events, and we can only hope that this trend continues to spread, leaving a lasting impact on our planet.

With its rich history, cultural significance, and commitment to sustainability, the Gorsam Kora Festival is an event that deserves recognition, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to share this captivating story with our readers.
