Kokrajhar Press Club Decries Unconstitutional Silence: Journalist Dilwar Hussain’s Detention Condemned
Guwahati, Assam: The Kokrajhar Press Club (KPC) has condemned the detention of journalist and Assistant Secretary of the Guwahati Press Club, Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, by Panbazar Police while he was covering a protest program organized by the Assam Jatiya Yuva Shakti in front of the Apex Bank in Guwahati.
According to sources, Mazumdar was performing his professional duties when he was summoned and detained by the police. “This is a highly shameful act by the police,” said KPC President Kishore Sarkar. “Dilwar was simply doing his job, and it’s unacceptable for the police to interfere with that.”
KPC Secretary Suraj Basumatary echoed Sarkar’s sentiments, stating, “The police have no right to detain a journalist just because he’s doing his job. This is a clear violation of press freedom.” The KPC has demanded that the Assam Police clarify the reason behind Mazumdar’s detention, and is urging the authorities to release him at the earliest possible.
The protest program, organized by the Assam Jatiya Yuva Shakti, was reportedly peaceful, but the police’s decision to detain Mazumdar has sparked outrage among journalists and press organizations. The KPC is not the only one condemning the police’s actions; many are calling for the immediate release of Mazumdar and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his detention.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of journalists in Assam, with many arguing that the police are overstepping their boundaries. “When journalists are detained while doing their job, it sends a chilling message to those who are supposed to hold the powerful accountable,” said a local journalist.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Assam Police will respond to the backlash. For now, the KPC’s condemnation and demand for clarification has sent a clear message: the press will not be silenced.
In related news, a protest erupted at Assam University’s Diphu Campus over allegations of sexual harassment, with students demanding immediate action from the administration. Meanwhile, the Apex Bank in Guwahati remained closed due to the ongoing protest.
