Tripura Budget Session Marred by Opposition Boycott
The fifth day of the ongoing Budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly got off to a tumultuous start, with the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) absent from the proceedings. The boycott was sparked by the party’s allegations that Speaker Biswabandhu Sen has been misusing his authority and flouting Assembly rules.
According to sources, CPIM representatives on Wednesday had announced their decision to boycott the entire Budget session, citing Speaker Sen’s alleged irregularities. This move has left the ruling BJP, led by Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, grappling with the challenge of conducting proceedings without the opposition’s participation.
Despite the impasse, the Chief Minister has called on the opposition to reconsider their stance and participate in the Budget session, which is scheduled to continue until April 1 for the fiscal year 2025-26. The ongoing session, which began on March 21, aims to discuss and approve the state’s financial plans for the upcoming year.
The absence of the opposition party has left a significant void in the proceedings, with some political experts predicting a K-shaped recovery for the state’s economy if the session is not conducted smoothly. “The boycott is not only detrimental to the functioning of the Assembly but also undermines the state’s economic prospects,” said a local economist, requesting anonymity. “The onus is now on the ruling party to ensure a smooth and transparent process.”
