Academic Integrity Under Fire: Casteist Remarks Stoke Outrage at Assam University
Assam University Professor Accused of Caste-Based Discrimination and Abuse, Filing of FIR Demanded
A complaint has been lodged against Professor Mahmood Ansari, a faculty member of the Economics Department at Assam University in Silchar, over allegations of caste-based discrimination, verbal abuse, and threats made against maintenance workers employed under a contractor, Rajashree Dev, at his official residence on March 12, 2025.
According to the complaint, Professor Ansari hurled offensive language at the workers, including derogatory remarks and insults, after they apparently encountered a 10-minute delay during their Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) duties. The workers claim that the professor made hurtful comments, such as “You are like filthy drain worms, illiterate people. Only fools are found in Assam, this doesn’t happen outside. Everyone in Barak Valley is ignorant.”
The complaint also alleges that Professor Ansari targeted Rupak Mala, a worker from a Scheduled Caste (SC) background, by making comments that were degrading and offensive, calling him “bloodly low caste and comparing him to a swine.” The workers further accused the professor of detaining them at his residence, unleashing his dog to intimidate them, and making physical threats, including warning them of a “lifetime lesson” while repeatedly making demeaning comments about the people of Barak Valley.
The affected workers initially reported the incident to their contractor on March 13, who then filed a written complaint with the Assam University administration. However, an agonizing 17 days have passed since the incident, but no action or investigation has been initiated by the administration. The workers have since filed a police complaint, seeking the registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, a thorough and immediate investigation into the incident, and strict legal action against Professor Ansari to ensure justice is served.
The complaintants have expressed their faith in the legal system and have urged the law enforcement authorities to intervene swiftly, describing the incident as a serious case of abuse and discrimination. They have also demanded a “thorough and immediate investigation into the matter, strict legal action against the professor to ensure justice is served.”
