High Court Dismisses PIL on Sports Complex Boundary Wall, Local Citizens Left Fearing Inadequate Security
Meghalaya High Court Rejects PIL on PA Sangma Sports Complex Boundary Wall
The Meghalaya High Court has dismissal a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the boundary wall of the PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura. The court deemed the petition to be frivolous and explicitly stated that public interest litigation is not meant for trivial complaints.
According to Chief Justice IP Mukerji, the court disposes of the petition to emphasize that the previous temporary boundary wall, which was temporarily repaired, has since been replaced by a permanent one. This new development renders the original complaint unnecessary, and the court has explicitly stated that such petitions will not be entertained in the future.
As such, the Meghalaya High Court has firmly rejected the PIL, which questioned the legitimacy of the boundary wall construction. In doing so, the court made it clear that public interest litigation is not a suitable forum for every alleged act of government tolerance or omission. In other words, it is not a domain for busybodies.
The PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex, situated on a 10-acre property, comprises a football ground, indoor swimming pool, basketball, and badminton court facilities. The Meghalaya High Court’s decision is expected to put an end to the prolonged controversy surrounding the sports complex, ensuring that the newly constructed permanent boundary wall remains intact and the complex continues to flourish.
