Daring Gun-toting Narcotics Kingpin Busted in Itanagar After Fierce Showdown
Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, witnessed a dramatic shootout on Saturday evening, as a notorious narcotics trafficker, Rohit Basumatary, was finally arrested by the police after a high-speed chase and intense gun battle.
According to the Capital Superintendent of Police, Rohit Rajbir Singh, the operation was carried out on the basis of intelligence reports about drug movement in the capital region. At around 6:15 pm, police set up a checkpoint, and when a blue Renault car was signalled to stop, the driver, suspected to be Basumatary, accelerated instead, attempting to evade capture. However, he lost control of the vehicle, and the chase continued, with Basumatary emerging from the wreckage, pulling out a firearm, and opening fire at the approaching officers.
The police, led by ITBP’s Kengo Dirchi, inspectors Khiksi Yangfo and Sushant Jha, SI Tamo Bakhang, and ASI Manish Kumar, responded with controlled fire, neutralizing Basumatary with a non-lethal shot to the leg, bringing the stand-off to an end. Following his capture, the suspect was taken to RK Mission Hospital under tight security, with SI Bakhang sustaining minor injuries and ASI Manish Kumar bearing abrasions from the scuffle.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 12 grams of suspected heroin, hidden inside a soapbox near the spare tyre, alongside a sophisticated firearm, marked ‘Made in the USA’, and six live rounds. Preliminary investigations have revealed Basumatary’s criminal activities spanning across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, with multiple cases linked to robbery, illegal possession of arms, and drug trafficking.
The SP added that Basumatary had been on the radar of law enforcement agencies, with cases registered in police stations across Chayagaon, Golaghat, Badorpur, Dergaon, Sootea, Chimpu, Bokajan, and Tangla. A case has been registered at Chimpu police station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Arms Act, and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
