“NEHUSU and KSU Professors Called to Action: Refrain from Orders from Unjust VC”.
Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union Slams Vice Chancellor and Registrar
The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have issued a joint appeal to the university’s teaching staff, urging them to ignore any instructions given by Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and Registrar Col. Omkar Singh, citing violations of the university’s acts and statutes. The students’ union has slammed the two officials for attempting to resume their duties remotely, despite being out of station, and for issuing orders that contravene the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Act, 1973.
According to the students’ union, the Vice Chancellor has been on an extended leave for 127 days, having last reported for duty on November 15, 2024. The union claims that Shukla’s claim to resume duties via an online mode from Delhi is arbitrary, unsubstantiated, and against the established rules and regulations of the university. "There is no provision in the university’s rules or regulations that allows the resumption of duties remotely. Students of the university must condemn the act of the VC and Registrar," the students’ union stated.
The union has also criticized Registrar Col. Omkar Singh for failing to report back to the university since the commencement of his leave, and has condemned any action, direction, or order issued by him during this period. The students’ union has urged faculty members to refrain from complying with any orders given by the Vice Chancellor and Registrar, warning that those who do so will be seen as acting against the interests of the students.
NEHUSU and KSU have also notified NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) President Lakhon Kma of their concerns, requesting that the faculty members of the university respect their stance and not comply with any instructions given by the VC and Registrar. The students’ union has expressed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the students and has pledged to keep a close watch on the situation, ensuring that their demands are met.
