Exclusive Elite Class: Enjoy Complimentary Snacks, High-Speed Wi-Fi, and Premium Bags!

A Spirit Airlines flight prepares to land at San Diego International Airport on January 18, 2024. In a bid to boost revenue amid challenges—from a blocked JetBlue takeover to engine recalls and intense competition—Spirit Airlines is overhauling its fare structure. Starting next month, the Florida-based budget carrier will roll out bundled ticket packages for its highest-priced categories, offering amenities it previously charged for individually.

The new service categories include “Go Big,” which features the roomy Big Front Seats and comes with free Wi-Fi, checked and cabin luggage, and unlimited snacks and drinks. “Go Comfy” offers standard legroom with a blocked middle seat, early boarding, one snack and nonalcoholic beverage, and checked baggage. “Go Savvy” fares include either a checked bag or carry-on. The basic “Go” option retains Spirit’s low-cost structure with fees for extras like checked bags, Wi-Fi, and snacks. These packages become available for booking on August 16 and will be in effect from August 27.

CEO Ted Christie emphasizes that Spirit is targeting travelers who desire a premium experience but still seek affordability. This strategic shift is in response to underperformance in non-ticket revenues and upcoming pilot furloughs. Spirit’s move echoes similar efforts by Southwest and Frontier Airlines to attract more revenue by enhancing upmarket offerings.

With this new structure, Spirit aims to better compete with larger rivals like United Airlines, which also cater to both budget and premium passengers.
