Transform Your Future: NFR’s Bold Leap into Sustainable Energy with Cutting-Edge Solar Power Plants
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is intensifying its efforts to generate more green energy by installing roof-top solar power plants across service buildings and installations within its zone. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ policy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
In a significant move to reduce fossil fuel dependence, NFR generated 1.45 million units of renewable energy from April to June 2024, saving approximately Rs 97.9 lakhs. Additionally, due to improved power management, timely payment rebates, and other measures, NFR saved another Rs 66.7 lakhs for non-traction energy consumption during the same period.
Under the ‘Go-Green’ mission, solar panels installed at various stations and service buildings produced a cumulative 6764 kWp of power until June 2024. Key installations include solar panels with capacities of 610 kWp in Katihar, 381 kWp in Alipurduar, 1066 kWp in Rangiya, 1020 kWp in Lumding, and 190 kWp in Tinsukia. The headquarters and Guwahati Sub-divisional unit together hold a capacity of 1497 kWp, while workshops in New Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh have 1000 kWp each.
Twenty-four stations and field office buildings in Assam and Tripura were equipped with solar roof panels generating 642 kWp from April to June 2024. Major stations like Udaipur, Bamunigaon, Azara, Gohpur, Barpeta Road, Dudhnoi, and Krishnai have all been fitted with these panels.
Moreover, NFR has installed 2100 brushless DC (BLDC) fans, saving 32 watts per ceiling fan, culminating in an overall saving of 67200 watts and 806 units of energy.
NFR aims to install solar plants on all feasible station buildings, service/office buildings, residential buildings, and level crossing gates to maximize solar energy use, thereby meeting daily power needs and contributing to environmental sustainability. This initiative not only supports eco-friendly practices but also results in significant financial savings for the railways and the country.
