Revolutionize Malayalam Cinema: Behind the Scene App Streamlines Film Production with Unprecedented Efficiency!
When Shameer Sharafudeen and Renjith Raghunathan sold their web development company in 2017, they couldn’t have predicted their future roles as pioneers in the film industry. The duo has now launched “Behind the Scene,” a groundbreaking mobile app that aims to streamline the multifaceted world of filmmaking. Typically, software applications focus solely on pre-production tasks; however, “Behind the Scene” sets itself apart by covering every phase of the filmmaking process—pre-production, production, and post-production.
The visionaries behind this innovative tool are no strangers to technology or cinema. Both Shameer and Renjith are natives of Thiruvananthapuram with a shared academic background in computer science. Their entrepreneurial journey began with the founding of their company, Colorz, in 2008, which they later sold before diving into the film industry. Shameer’s interest in movies was sparked when he watched “Ustad Hotel” in Dubai, as he admits, “Cinema is indeed rocket science! It’s a mess with no streamlining.” These experiences pushed him to conceive the app, aiming to bring order to the production chaos he encountered.
Tested during the production of the web series “Kerala Crime Files” and debuting in Khalid Rahman’s upcoming sports drama “Alappuzha Gymkhana,” “Behind the Scene” is already proving its worth. Beyond facilitating major projects like “Padakkuthira” starring Aju Varghese and “Mathew Thomas’ Night Riders,” the app is also being used in Nissam Basheer’s Prithviraj-starrer “I, Nobody.” A notable advantage of the app is its ability to centralize all crucial production elements—scripts, locations, and wardrobe details—making it an indispensable tool for assistant directors and production teams. “For example, a location manager can upload details about a site, while costume designers can input outfit options directly into the app,” explains Shameer. This ensures real-time collaboration and decision-making, minimizing errors and inefficiencies.
Incorporating elements akin to Enterprise Resource Planning systems, the app simplifies the arduous task of managing shooting schedules and generating call sheets. From a technical standpoint, it provides extensive modules for camera and editor reports, crucial for a streamlined post-production phase. Collaborators on this project include figures like director Sunil Ibrahim and cinematographer Swaroop Philip, highlighting the app’s industry-wide support. Jamshi P, an engineer and entrepreneur involved with the app, notes, “New filmmakers are open to using it while it takes time to convince those familiar with traditional workflows.”
The app has garnered praise from seasoned industry professionals, including veteran editor Ranjan Abraham. Despite initial skepticism from some, its practical applications have led to widespread acceptance. “The updates reach everyone, saving a lot of paperwork,” says Nissam Basheer, who is currently using the app for “I, Nobody.” The team’s openness to user feedback has resulted in ongoing feature enhancements, impressing even renowned cinematographer PC Sriram, who recommended it to notable producers.
“Behind the Scene” is gaining traction beyond Malayalam cinema, attracting interest across various language industries due to its promise of enhanced efficiency. The app, accessible via iOS, Android, and the web, is positioned to become an indispensable asset in modern filmmaking. As Jamshi optimistically predicts, “We have so far received positive responses, and we’re confident that filmmakers will embrace this ready-to-use product.” For more details, visit www.behindthescene.app.
