Mizoram Tourist Boom: 3.63 Lakh Visitors in 2023, But Will Restrictions Dampen Foreign Enthusiasm?
Mizoram Sees Surge in Tourism, But New Security Restrictions Cast a Cloud
The picturesque state of Mizoram in northeastern India has been witnessing a remarkable surge in tourist influx over the past few years, with a staggering 3.63 lakh visitors, including 4,033 foreigners, having arrived in the state until December 2023, according to State Tourism Minister Lalrinpuii. This remarkable growth in tourism can be attributed to the gradual return to normalcy following the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted travel in 2020-21. That year, the state saw a paltry 20,564 domestic visitors and just three foreign tourists.
However, the tide turned in 2021-22, with a significant jump in tourist arrivals. Over 1.32 lakh domestic tourists and 94 foreign nationals flocked to the state, drawn to its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. This upward trend continued in 2022-23, with more than 2.18 lakh domestic tourists and 3,554 foreign visitors exploring the state’s scenic attractions. By the end of 2023, the numbers had climbed further, with over 2.15 lakh domestic and 3,884 foreign tourists visiting Mizoram.
However, tourism officials are now grappling with the concerns surrounding the recent reimposition of the Protected Area Regime (PAR) by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in December 2023. This move requires foreign nationals to obtain Protected Area Permits (PAPs) to enter certain regions, including Mizoram, to address growing security concerns in the state’s border with Myanmar and escalating political unrest in the neighboring country.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma echoed these concerns in the State Assembly on March 10, revealing that some individuals, including those from the US and UK, had entered Myanmar via Mizoram and were allegedly involved in providing arms training to insurgent groups. The Chief Minister also shared that a foreign national had been arrested for possessing live ammunition, lending weight to the Central Government’s decision to reimpose the PAR.
The numbers tell the story, with domestic tourists accounting for a staggering 98.22 percent of the total arrivals, while foreign visitors making up just 1.78 percent. While the state is reeling from the impact of the PAR, only time will tell how this development will affect its already thriving tourism industry. With its rugged landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, Mizoram is poised to continue enthralling visitors. However, only time will tell if the new security regime will be a blessing or a curse for this burgeoning tourist destination.
