Punjab Police Clamps Down on Waris Punjab De: 2 Key Members Taken into Custody in Bustling Dibrugarh
A Punjab Police team of 25 members has secured the custody of two key associates of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, who have been lodged in the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail since March 2023. The associates, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala and Bhagwant Singh, were taken into custody after the Punjab Police obtained permission from a local court.
The team had initially applied for the transit remand of seven Waris Punjab De members, but faced legal complications, resulting in permission being granted only for two individuals. Sources close to the matter revealed that the Punjab Police will reapply for the transit remand of the remaining five members, including Basant Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Harjeet Singh, and Daljeet Singh Kalsi, on Tuesday. These individuals are expected to be flown to Punjab under heavy security to face trial in the 2023 Ajnala Police Station attack case.
The development comes as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Government has decided not to reinvoke the National Security Act (NSA) against the seven Waris Punjab De members, whose two-year detention period is set to expire on March 19. However, the remaining three members, including Amritpal Singh, Varinder Singh Johal, and Papalpreet Singh, will continue to remain in the Dibrugarh Jail until the Punjab Government takes further action.
Notably, Amritpal Singh, the head of Waris Punjab De, won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 General Elections from the Dibrugarh Jail, highlighting the significant political implications of this development. The Punjab Police’s efforts to secure the custody of the Waris Punjab De members marks a significant step forward in the investigation and potential trial in the Ajnala Police Station attack case.
As the Punjab Government weighs its next move on the remaining Waris Punjab De members, this developments raises important questions about the future of the party and its leaders. Will the Punjab Government continue to take a tough stance on the Waris Punjab De members, or will they opt for a more conciliatory approach? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the recent developments will have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of Punjab.
