Tourism in Madhya Pradesh, fondly known as the ‘Heart of India,’ is witnessing a significant uptick in visitors from Telangana. Enhanced connectivity and improved facilities have played a pivotal role in drawing pilgrims and travelers to its renowned religious and heritage sites. Equipped with more than a dozen acclaimed pilgrimage centers, Madhya Pradesh sees the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Kal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain, and the Omkareshwar Temple as top choices for visitors from Telangana. According to a senior officer from the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB), many tourists embark on the Indore circuit, which is well-connected by flights from Hyderabad, allowing travelers to explore spiritual destinations including the revered Jyotirlingas.
To cater to diverse tourist demands, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has tailored packages that account for tourist numbers, stay duration, and travel preferences. These packages guarantee affordable accommodations while cars and minibuses remain popular modes of transport due to a well-maintained national highway linking both states. The Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) adds another layer of convenience by offering over 170 hotels ranging from three-star properties to rural homestays, giving tourists an authentic taste of village life.
Madhya Pradesh’s historical allure is further enriched by its three UNESCO World Heritage sites—the temples of Khajuraho, the Sanchi Stupa, and the Bhimbetka rock shelters. During February’s Khajuraho Dance Festival, the city becomes a vibrant hub for both domestic and international tourists. This year, the festival set a Guinness World Record with an uninterrupted 24-hour classical dance performance involving 139 artists. Nevertheless, there’s a collective hope that post-pandemic, foreign tourist footfall will fully rebound.
Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary of Tourism and the Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, has emphasized the state government’s commitment to infrastructure expansion, cultural heritage promotion, and digital marketing strategies to attract more visitors both domestically and internationally.
Beyond spiritual and historical explorations, Madhya Pradesh captivates heritage tourists with its ancient forts like the 6th-century Gwalior Fort and 17th-century Orchha palaces. The state is equally inviting for nature enthusiasts, with national parks such as Panna and Pench offering thriving wildlife populations including the renowned tigers, leopards, and vultures. Known as the Tiger and Cheetah State, its jungle safaris are immensely popular, requiring bookings several months in advance. Adventure seekers also find excitement in the Betwa River’s rafting opportunities, providing a unique perspective of the heritage city of Orchha.
The state’s culinary scene adds yet another dimension to its appeal, offering diverse regional flavors from areas like Bagelkhand, Bhopal, Bundelkhand, and Malwa, catering to both vegetarians and meat-lovers alike.
While film, adventure, and wildlife tourism steadily gain momentum, Madhya Pradesh’s vast forest coverage enhances its reputation as a destination with something for everyone. This vibrant mix of culture, history, nature, and gastronomy cements its status as a must-visit locale for travelers across the globe.
