Heartbreaking Landslide in Manipur’s Dimthanlong: Tragic Loss of Mother and Child, Another Severely Injured
Tragic Landslide in Tamenglong Claims Lives Amidst Political Controversy Over Budget Allocations
Dimthanlong village in Tamenglong Ward No. 3 was struck by a devastating landslide on the night of July 29, claiming the lives of a mother and her child. Additionally, a resident, Ringsinlung Kahmei, sustained critical injuries. The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, conveying condolences to the bereaved family and assuring that Kahmei will receive the necessary medical attention.
In a related political development, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is embroiled in a contentious debate with the opposition over budget allocations for Manipur. Singh, addressing accusations of negligence towards the state in the Union Budget, firmly rebutted the claims, emphasizing that Rs 250 crore has already been allocated for damage caused by hailstorms and floods, with the funds being effectively distributed.
The controversy was sparked on July 23 by Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who condemned the Union Budget 2024 for neglecting flood relief and rehabilitation packages for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Manipur. Dr. Akoijam criticized the budget’s failure to address these critical needs, underscoring a growing discontent within the state regarding its financial support.
As the state grapples with natural disasters and the ensuing political disputes, the tragic loss from the landslide has cast a somber shadow, highlighting the urgent need for both immediate relief and long-term supportive measures for affected communities in Manipur.
