Mumbai Indians Script Thrilling 8-Run Victory Over Delhi Capitals to Secure Women’s Premier League Title
Mumbai Indians Claim Second Women’s Premier League Title with Thrilling Win over Delhi Capitals
Mumbai Indians (MI) have emerged victorious in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) finale, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by eight runs in a thrilling match at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, on March 15. The win marks MI’s second WPL title, with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s exceptional leadership paving the way for her team’s success.
Kaur, known for her impressive captaincy, shone with a 44-ball 66, guiding her team to a fighting 149 for 7, despite an underwhelming effort from her fellow batters. Her performance was instrumental in taking MI to a total that was, at one point, considered below par on a good batting track. In contrast, DC’s bowlers pushed themselves to finish at 141 for 9, leaving them short of the target.
DC’s chances of winning took a significant hit after MI’s most dominant player, Nat Sciver-Brunt, removed skipper Meg Lanning with an off-cutter, and Shafali Verma, who has struggled with her technique this season, was caught plumb in front by Shabnim Ismail. The pressure mounted on DC’s batters, with Jemimah Rodrigues (30 runs off 21 balls) and Marizanne Kapp (40 runs off 26 balls) trying to mount a comeback, but ultimately falling short.
Harmanpreet’s years of experience as an international skipper proved invaluable as she expertly marshaled her resources, rotating her bowlers effectively to prevent DC batters from settling into their innings. Sciver-Brunt (3/30), Shabnim Ismail (1/15), Amelia Kerr (2/25 in 4 overs), and Indian youngster Saika Ishaque (1/33 in 4 overs) combined to pick up wickets at crucial moments, giving MI the edge they needed to clinch the title.
Earlier, DC managed to restrict MI to 149 for 7, with Kaur and Sciver-Brunt adding 89 runs in over 10 overs. However, Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal for 30 off 28 balls, caught at square leg while trying to slog-sweep, marked a turning point, as MI’s total ballooned to 118 for 6 in no time. Jonassen’s twin blows in the 16th over put pressure on Harmanpreet, who eventually fell for 66 off 44 balls, attempting one shot too many.
The win marks MI’s second WPL title, with Harmanpreet’s leadership playing a vital role in their victory. Kaur’s masterful 44-ball 66 and Sciver-Brunt’s 30 off 28 balls propelled MI to a position from which they could successfully defend. The Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, suffered their third consecutive loss, ending their campaign without a title.
