demonstrators urge swift doctor solution as akm rallies against imdh mokokchung shortage
Residents of Mokokchung Protest Doctor and Staff Shortage at Local Hospital
Mokokchung, Nagaland: Tensions ran high on Saturday as the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) organized a public rally demanding urgent government intervention in the persistent shortage of doctors and medical staff at Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH). The rally, attended by hundreds, echoed with the collective frustration and desperation of the people, who have been reeling from the crisis for far too long.
According to AKM President Lanutoshi Aier, the government has failed to respond to multiple representations and ultimatums, including a seven-day notice issued on March 6, despite the dire need for a solution. Aier lamented that the hospital, which caters to patients not only from Mokokchung but also from other districts, including Wokha, Zunheboto, and almost 90% of the population from Eastern Nagaland, is understaffed and unable to provide adequate medical care.
During a meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung on March 14, AKM representatives were told that doctors would be appointed after the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) examinations, which have not been held for the past 4-5 years. "These exams have not been held for the past 4-5 years. Are we supposed to wait for another 4-5 years?" Aier questioned, emphasizing the government’s failure to make alternative arrangements despite being aware of the crisis. He also criticized the government for not providing written assurances, only circulating a draft agreement that was not signed by AKM representatives.
Aier urged the people to stand united in demanding a solution, reminding that leaders are elected to serve the people and should act accordingly. "Those in power must fulfill their responsibilities," he said, adding that the people of Mokokchung have endured the issue for far too long. "We are not demanding a solution out of greed, but out of necessity."
Vice President Aowati Ozukum echoed Aier’s sentiments, expressing gratitude to AKM for spearheading the movement and emphasizing the importance of essential public services, including good medical facilities, quality education, and robust transportation and communication systems. Ozukum also flayed the government for failing to provide these basic needs despite collecting taxes and enforcing laws on the people.
The rally concluded with a prayer pronounced by Rev Ponen Longchar, Pastor of Mokokchung Town Baptist Arogo (MTBA). The AKM has warned that stricter measures will follow if the government fails to act positively, and the people of Mokokchung will continue to stand united in demanding a solution to this long-standing crisis.
