Lachit Barphukan Police Academy Inauguration: A New Era of Excellence to Begin Today with Union Home Minister Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam’s Golaghat district, on March 15. The Minister had arrived in Dergaon on the evening of March 14 for a three-day tour of Assam and Mizoram. The police academy, spread over 340 acres, is being refurbished at an estimated cost of Rs 1,024 crore in two phases.
The first phase, estimated to cost around Rs 167.4 crore, includes a five-story building that features smart classrooms, weapon stimulators, research labs, and administrative offices. The building also houses a museum and a modern parade ground, designed to provide a unique training experience for law enforcement personnel. According to officials, this modern infrastructure is designed to give trainees both theoretical and practical aspects of police training seamlessly.
One of the most significant features of the academy is the weapon training simulator, which will allow law enforcement personnel to prepare for real-world combat scenarios in a completely safe environment without risking harm or incurring costs. The simulator can be adapted to various firearms, enabling the training of recruits for special courses, including commando training. The smart classrooms will be equipped with interactive digital boards and personal computers, providing a state-of-the-art learning environment. The building will also feature a library, computer labs, and seminar rooms.
The museum and modern parade ground are also part of the first phase, which will provide a dedicated space for training and exercising. The residential infrastructure, including quarters for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers/personnel, and accommodations for 2,640 trainees, will be developed in the second phase at an estimated cost of Rs 425.48 crore. This phase aims to provide a comprehensive training facility for the next generation of law enforcement personnel in Assam.
Amit Shah’s visit to the region highlights the Union government’s commitment to strengthening the security apparatus in Assam and Mizoram. The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is a significant step towards enhancing the skills and capabilities of law enforcement agencies in the region, ensuring better preparedness for the ever-evolving threats to national security. As the Home Minister inaugurates the first phase of the academy, he will lay the foundation stone for the next phase, signaling the Union government’s continued support for the development of the region’s security infrastructure.
