Manipur Police Foil PLA Coup: Captured Chinese Militant in Kakching, Shining a Light on North East’s Security Dilemma

In a swift and successful operation, Manipur Police arrested a militant of the proscribed People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the armed wing of the banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), in the southern Kakching district on Friday. This development comes after acting on intelligence inputs regarding extortion drives, a team of the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Manipur police commandos launched a cordon and search operation at Langmeidong village under the Waikhong police station.

The 26-year-old captive, identified as Thokchom Diamond Meitei @ Tamthouba, is a resident of Langmeidong Mamang Leikai, Kakching District. Reports suggest that the PLA activist had been threatening staff members of schools and extorting money from educational institutions in the Langmeidong areas of Kakching District over the past few months.

During the 2-hour operation, the police recovered one mobile phone and a wallet containing Rs 320 from Meitei’s possession. A case has been registered at the Waikhong district police station, and further investigation is underway. The arrest is seen as a significant blow to the PLA’s extortion racket in the region.
