Tragic Gunfire Strikes Randall’s Island: Heartbreaking Loss and Injuries in Shooting Near NYC Migrant Shelter
Early Monday, a woman was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting near a migrant shelter on Randall’s Island, New York City, as a crowd gathered to view the results of Venezuela’s presidential election, according to police. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m., when a gunman fired into the crowd positioned in a park.
The deceased woman and another injured woman are believed to have resided at the shelter, said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell. The suspect, a man reportedly upset over a prior robbery, fired from about 100 feet away before fleeing on a moped. No arrests have been made.
The 44-year-old woman succumbed to gunshot wounds to her face and back. A 31-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man were shot in the back and throat, respectively. Both are hospitalized in stable condition. Their identities have not been released.
Chell indicated that the shooter was likely seeking retaliation for a previous armed robbery. Approximately 50 individuals were gathered on an athletic field a few hundred feet from the shelter, where about 3,000 migrants sleep nightly.
NYPD spokesperson Tarik Sheppard confirmed that many were celebrating Venezuela’s election outcome, though he acknowledged that the park’s public nature makes it impossible to confirm if all attendees were shelter residents.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council announced President Nicolás Maduro had won a third six-year term, defeating retired diplomat Edmundo González. The election results have been contested, prompting protests in Caracas.
Randall’s Island hosts New York City’s largest shelter for asylum seekers, established in August 2023 following an influx of migrants due to policies by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The shelter, located on the island’s southern tip, features tents for dining and sanitation facilities.
