BJP to Contest Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Polls: Six Fresh Faces Unveiled
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidate list for the upcoming elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC), scheduled to take place on April 2. At a press conference in Jorhat, Lok Sabha MP and state president, Dilip Saikia, revealed the names of the six candidates who will be representing the party in the polls.
The selected candidates are Sushita Nath for the 15th Agia constituency, Bhairab Kachari for the 2nd Kothakuti (ST) constituency, Premajuli Rabha for the Jayramkuchi constituency, Meghali Rabha for the Bondapara constituency, Ajit Rabha for the Bamunigaon constituency, and Kamaleshwar Rabha for the Shilpota constituency. The party will contest in six out of the 36 constituencies, with the Rabha Hasong Joutho Sangrami Mancha contesting in 29 seats. One constituency will be for the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), which has not yet been confirmed.
According to Saikia, the polling will begin at 7:00 AM and conclude at 3:00 PM on April 2. The counting of votes is scheduled for April 4, with a reserve day, April 3, in case of any irregularities or unforeseen circumstances requiring a repoll. The RHAC election will see a total of 4,45,586 voters, including 229,394 women and 11 others, participating in the polls.
In related news, the party also announced its plans to contest in 40 constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) elections. However, it will not contest in the constituencies of Hagrama Mohilary and CEM Pramod Boro, in line with the decision made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to respect the precedent. “BJP will contest the elections independently,” said Saikia, emphasizing the party’s commitment to adhering to the state’s election rules.
The party’s decision to contest in only six seats in RHAC and 40 seats in BTAD was revealed at the State Election Committee meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, chaired by state president Shri Dilip Saikia. The move is seen as a strategic one by the party, aiming to test its electoral strategy in these regions. With the elections around the corner, the people of Assam and other parts of the state will be closely watching the developments in these constituencies, as the outcome is expected to have significant implications for the future of regional politics in the state.
