East Bengal Triumph with 3-1 Victory Over Indian Air Force in Durand Cup Opener

KOLKATA, July 29: East Bengal launched their campaign in the 133rd Durand Cup with a commanding 3-1 win against the Indian Air Force Football Team (IAFFT) in their Group A fixture. Despite conceding an early goal, East Bengal displayed resilience and skill to secure the victory and top the group standings, edging out their fierce rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

The Indian Air Force took an unexpected lead in the 19th minute when Somananda Singh capitalized on Saurav Sadhukhan’s precise cross from the right wing. Singh’s powerful header left East Bengal’s goalkeeper, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, with no chance, marking the game’s first goal.

East Bengal responded just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Madih Talal orchestrated a brilliant play, lofting a perfectly timed chipped ball to David Lalhlansanga. The Mizo forward skillfully controlled the pass, thwarted a defender’s challenge, and elegantly chipped the ball over the Air Force goalkeeper, equalizing for East Bengal and marking his debut goal for the club.

The momentum shifted in favor of East Bengal in the second half. In the 61st minute, Dimitrios Diamantakos found the back of the net with a powerful header, assisted by a flawless cross from left-back Mark Zothanpuia. This goal was again set up by the industrious Madih Talal, giving East Bengal the lead.

The team solidified their dominance seven minutes later with a third goal. After receiving a pass from Sourav, Diamantakos cleverly distributed the ball to Saul Crespo, who made no mistake with his finish, sealing the 3-1 victory for East Bengal.

With this win, last year’s runners-up East Bengal have made a strong statement at the start of the tournament, underscoring their intent to go all the way this season. The team’s clinical performance has put them at the top of Group A, sending a clear message to their competitors.
