Calcutta High Court Seeks to Safeguard Students at Jogesh Chandra Law College
A student from Jogesh Chandra Law College in Kolkata has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking a guarantee of safety within the college campus, as well as the installation of CCTV cameras and a ban on outsiders entering the premises. The court has agreed to hear the matter, which is set to take place on Thursday.
The petition, filed in the court of Justice Biswajit Basu, stems from reports of outsiders disrupting student activities and causing disturbances on campus. The petitioner alleges that these individuals are entering the college, distributing colours, and harassing students. Furthermore, the student claims that the local police have been unwilling to take action against such incidents, leaving the students feeling vulnerable and uncertain about their safety.
The move comes on the back of a recent High Court directive to provide security for Saraswati Puja festivities at the same college. Justice Jay Sengupta had directed the police authorities to deploy a commissioner-level officer to oversee the event and prevent any unauthorized individuals from entering the campus. The court had also instructed that the preparations be filmed and the illegal puja pandal set up inside the Day College premises to be dismantled and documented.
The student’s concern is rooted in an incident last month, when an individual identified as Mohammed Shabbir Ali allegedly attempted to disrupt the Saraswati Puja celebrations. The student’s petition has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of students at the college, and it remains to be seen how the High Court will address these concerns. As the matter comes up for hearing on Thursday, students and parents are anxiously awaiting the court’s decision, hoping for a ruling that will bring a sense of security and stability to the college campus.
