Teaching Tensions: North Eastern Hill University’s Educational Crisis Hits a Boiling Point
Rowdy Demands Reforms as NEHU Vice Chancellor Accused of "Personal Agendas"
A scathing criticism has been leveled at the Vice Chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prabha Shankar Shukla, by the leaders of the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), who have accused him of pursuing "personal agendas" and mismanaging the institution. The stern rebuke comes as tensions simmer within the university, with allegations of nepotism, favoritism, and blatant disregard for university regulations spreading like wildfire.
According to NEHUTA President Lakhon Kma, Shukla’s "insufficient academic caliber" has led to widespread discontent among the faculty and students, with the Vice Chancellor accused of appointing unqualified and undeserving leaders, including retired teachers and administrators. Kma lamented that Shukla has failed to address the myriad issues plaguing the university, instead pursuing his own agenda at the expense of the institution and its stakeholders.
Kma specifically cited Shukla’s failure to consider the recommendations of various associations, including NEHUTA, NEHUNSA, and NEHUSU, on the smooth functioning of the university. He also expressed outrage at Shukla’s decision to create an arbitrary post of Campus Director for Tura, which is not recognized by NEHU or the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. Kma also highlighted the lack of a regular Controller of Examinations, Finance Officer, and Registrar, as well as the non-conduction of recruitment for non-teaching posts, which has left applicants demanding a refund of their fees.
The allegations have led to calls for Shukla’s resignation, with Kma challenging the Vice Chancellor to a face-off to address the issues. Kma argued that Shukla’s tenure as VC has been marked by a litany of failed promises, including the appointment of Pro-VCs for the Shillong and Tura campuses, which have yet to materialize. The NEHUTA President also claimed that Mawlai Town Dorbar had declared Shukla a persona non grata, banning him from entering the area, and that the Ministry of Education is currently examining the report of an inquiry committee investigating Shukla’s misdeeds.
As the university struggles to come to terms with the fallout, Kma emphasized that NEHUTA is committed to the welfare of NEHU and will leave it to the public to judge Shukla’s competence, arrogance, and hidden agenda. The fate of Shukla’s tenure hangs in the balance, with NEHUTA’s scathing rebuke adding fuel to the growing discontent within the institution.
