CoTU Condemns Homicide: Lalgouthang Singsit’s Body Found After Protests Over ‘Free Movement’ Directive
For Five Days, the Body of Lalgouthang Singsit Lay Unclaimed at Kangpokpi District Hospital Morgue, Amid Ongoing Protests Over Free Movement Policy
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has finally retrieved the body of Lalgouthang Singsit, who tragically passed away during a clash with security forces on March 8. The prolonged standoff over the free movement policy introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has left the community reeling, with Singsit’s body lying in the Kangpokpi District Hospital Morgue for five days.
Singsit’s death sparked widespread outrage, with the CoTU demanding the cancellation of the free movement policy and a judicial probe into the role of Kangpokpi’s Superintendent of Police. Despite multiple rounds of negotiations, the government failed to meet their demands, prompting the CoTU to intensify their protests.
In a somber turn of events, Singsit’s body was brought home to Keithelmanbi, where his family and community leaders paid their last respects. The funeral is scheduled for March 13 at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Phaijang. Lamminlun Singsit, CoTU General Secretary, expressed frustration over the government’s silence, stating, “We will no longer engage in talks with the government regarding Lalgouthang’s killing. He was not just a victim; he was a warrior who stood for our people.”
The crisis has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations and stakeholders expressing concern over the violence and escalating tensions in the region. As the situation remains precarious, the CoTU has called for calm, urging the community to observe a period of mourning and contemplation. The lingering impact of Singsit’s death underscores the pressing need for a comprehensive and inclusive dialogue between the government and the affected communities.
As the search for justice and peace continues, the community remains steadfast in their demands for transparency and accountability. The CoTU’s persistence in seeking truth and redress has brought the issue to the fore, highlighting the urgent need for a more inclusive approach to addressing the region’s complex challenges.
