Budget Showdown in Tripura: Assembly Session Kicks Off March 21
Tripura Assembly to Commence Budget Session from March 21
The 2025-26 budget for the Indian state of Tripura will be presented in the state’s legislative assembly on March 21, confirmed Parliamentary Affairs, Agriculture, and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday. The news comes as the state gears up for its second session of the year, which will feature seven sittings, concluding on April 1.
The budget presentation will be made by Finance, Planning, and Coordination Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, according to Nath. The minister added that the budget session schedule was finalized in a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, attended by Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, ruling party MLAs, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, and former Minister and Congress MLA Birajit Sinha.
Nath stressed the importance of the session, stating that the government wants to encourage a comprehensive discussion on the budget and other critical matters. He emphasized the need for maximum participation from both treasury and opposition benches to ensure a productive session. This upcoming session is significant, as it will be the longest in the past 15 years, with the intention to facilitate extended discussions.
The previous session, which took place from January 10, saw the passage of a bill increasing salaries and allowances for top officials, including the Chief Minister, Ministers, Speaker, Leader of Opposition, Chief Whip, and MLAs by 81-92 percent. The bill also introduced retirement benefits for MLAs who have served the House for even a single day. The revised salary scale is as follows: Chief Minister – ₹ 97,000, Deputy Chief Minister – ₹ 96,000, Ministers, Speaker, Leader of Opposition, and Chief Whip – ₹ 95,000, Deputy Speaker – ₹ 94,000, and an MLA – ₹ 93,000.
The upcoming session is anticipated to be a crucial one for the state, as it will set the stage for the 2025-26 budget and possibly influence key policy decisions. As the state prepares for this important session, observers will be watching closely to see how the government, opposition, and MLAs engage with the budget and other pressing issues.
