West Bengal Budget Session: Torn Documents Chaos as BJP MLAs Left Scrambling for Papers
West Bengal Assembly Speakers’ Decision to Restrict Papers for BJP MLAs Amid Protest
Tensions are running high in the West Bengal Assembly after Speaker Biman Banerjee ordered officials to withhold papers from BJP MLAs following allegations of torn papers being hurled at the Speaker’s desk. This is the second consecutive day that such incidents have taken place, prompting the Speaker to take drastic measures.
The controversy began when the opposition BJP proposed to bring an adjournment motion over alleged attacks on temples in Murshidabad and Basirhat. However, Speaker Banerjee rejected the proposal, as he did a similar one from the Opposition party to introduce a bill related to children. This move was met with resistance, as BJP MLAs began to walk out of the Assembly, raising slogans against the TMC government. It was then that papers were allegedly hurled at the Speaker’s desk.
This is not the first time the opposition has faced restrictions in the Assembly. On Monday, two other BJP MLAs were suspended for the entire session after allegedly throwing papers at the Speaker. In response, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who was also suspended for the entire session last month, accused the Speaker of being partial towards the ruling TMC and not honouring the Constitution.
Adhikari, who is currently facing a suspension until March 18 for allegedly insulting the Speaker, labelled Banerjee’s decision to restrict papers as the “rarest incident in the Indian Constitution.” “There is no democracy even inside the legislative Assembly. The opposition is not being heard. The Trinamool Congress government is trying to do everything by force. The walkout by BJP MLAs is in protest against this,” he stated, while adding that his party will protest at the Speaker’s Assembly constituency, Baruipur Paschim, and campaign against him.
In response, Speaker Banerjee has been quoted as saying, “They are welcome to hold protests against me in my constituency, but I wonder where they will get the people from.” “I guess they will bring people from Nandigram,” he added, referring to Adhikari’s constituency.
The development comes amid a backdrop of rising tensions in the state, with the opposition accusing the ruling party of attacking temples and the government denying any involvement. As the standoff continues, it remains to be seen whether the restrictions on BJP MLAs will lead to further protests and tensions in the Assembly.
