Kuki-Zo Eyes Resumption as MHA Holds Crucial Talks Amid Bitter Standoff in Churachandpur
As negotiations between Kuki-Zo leaders and the Kangpokpi district administration come to a standstill, fresh talks have commenced at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Lamka, Churachandpur. The marathon discussion, which began at 6:00 pm on March 11, is being led by AK Mishra, the MHA Advisor for the Northeast and interlocutor for Kuki Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups.
Representatives from various Kuki-Zo organizations, including the Kuki-Zo Council, Committee on Tribal Unity, Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, Kuki Inpi Churachandpur, ITAC, and Zomi Council are participating in the current round of discussions. The tense atmosphere is palpable, with emotions running high following the brutal killing of a young man at Keithelmanbi Military Colony in Kangpokpi district on March 8.
The victim’s body remains unclaimed at the Kangpokpi District Hospital Morgue, while Kuki-Zo women across the district have been holding continuous condolence vigils. The indefinite shutdown in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas has entered its third day, causing widespread disruption and public unrest. Hundreds of Kuki-Zo women are enforcing strict regulations on vehicle movement, allowing only emergency services to pass through. Commercial activity has ground to a halt, with shops and business establishments shut, and several trucks and goods carriers stranded in Senapati district.
The authorities are facing a daunting challenge in resolving the crisis, as the protests show no signs of subsiding. The situation has taken a toll on daily life, with people forced to navigate the district under strict vigilante rule. The shutdown has also taken a significant economic toll, with losses mounting for businesses and individuals.
As the situation unfolds, the election season in the region is likely to be affected, with the Election Commission already seeking suggestions from political parties on unresolved electoral issues. Against the backdrop of turmoil, the government will be under immense pressure to deliver a peaceful resolution, ensuring the revival of normalcy in the district. The way ahead will be challenging, but the authorities must prioritize the preservation of social harmony and the protection of human rights in their efforts to restore order.
As the days ahead promise to be crucial, we will monitor the situation closely, providing updates as and when necessary. For now, the future remains uncertain, with the people of Kangpokpi district holding their collective breath, hoping for a speedy resolution to the crisis.
