Infosys Makes a Major Shift: Ten Days a Month in the Office for Most Employees
March 10 was a pivotal day for Infosys employees, as the IT giant issued a notification that will significantly impact the way its technology workforce operates. In an effort to promote effective teamwork and provide flexibility, the company has introduced a new system intervention that will limit the number of work-from-home (WFH) days for most employees.
As the company looks to bring more employees back to its campuses, the new policy aims to address concerns surrounding the WFH model that was widely adopted during the pandemic. The shift is part of a broader strategy to foster a collaborative team culture and ensure compliance with the company’s new hybrid work model, which requires employees to work from the office for at least 10 days a month.
According to a senior executive, the system intervention is designed to be more flexible and adaptable, allowing team members to balance their work and personal responsibilities. However, the policy change will primarily affect employees at job levels 5 and below, including managers, senior managers, and other managers, excluding vice presidents.
As part of the new policy, employees will need to use a mobile application to log their attendance, which will not automatically approve WFH requests. This means that employees must physically attend the office at least 10 days each month, as stated by a senior employee who wished to remain unnamed. One employee noted that the previous flexibility allowed them to save significant time and energy on commuting, but expressed concern that this new requirement might decrease productivity for some staff members.
If an employee fails to meet the work-from-office target, the company will deduct the days from their leave balance, according to the email notification. This move is seen as a shift away from the WFH model adopted by many technology firms, including rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which has linked its 5-day work-from-office policy to employee variable pay.
In 2023, Infosys announced its return-to-office policy, which included specific weeks each quarter designated as “in-person collaboration” weeks, during which all team members were required to be present in the office to work together. The company’s decision to restrict WFH days is seen as a response to the challenges faced by employees, including a declining business climate, issues with employees taking on multiple jobs, and a desire to foster a collaborative team culture.
With over 323,000 employees, Infosys is the second-largest software services company in India. The company has maintained a strong stance on the hybrid work model, recognizing the benefits it offers in terms of flexibility, productivity, and employee well-being. As the IT industry continues to adapt to the post-pandemic landscape, it remains to be seen how this policy change will impact Infosys’s workforce and the wider industry.
