Shocking Discovery: Woman Found Chained to Tree in Maharashtra Forest with US Passport Photocopy
A distressing incident recently surfaced in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, where a 50-year-old woman was discovered chained to a tree with an iron chain. She was identified as Lalita Kayi, based on a photocopy of her US passport and an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address found in her possession.
The woman, reportedly in India for the past decade, drew attention when her cries were heard by a shepherd in Sonurli village, approximately 450 kilometers from Mumbai. The police were alerted on Saturday evening and promptly intervened. Initially taken to hospitals in Sawantwadi and Oros for immediate care, she was later transferred to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment due to her critical mental and physical condition. Fortunately, she is now out of danger, though medical professionals have identified underlying psychiatric issues and a lack of sustenance for a couple of days.
Further investigations have revealed that her visa has expired. Law enforcement is currently verifying her given documents to confirm her nationality and maintain communication with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office. The woman is unable to provide a statement, adding complexity to the investigation. Police suspect her husband, originating from Tamil Nadu, might have been responsible for her predicament before fleeing the scene.
As part of the probe, police units have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other regions to locate her relatives and gather more information. The authorities are thoroughly examining available evidence to ensure clarity and uphold legal procedures.
