Drain Chaos in Lumsey, Sikkim: Daily Commuting Nightmare Ensues
Residents of Lumsey struggle with perennial drainage woes
For over a year, the residents of Lumsey in Gangtok’s Sikkim have been plagued by an overflowing drainage system that has turned the main road into a filthy mess. The resulting sewage water has made daily commuting a daunting task, forcing pedestrians and vehicles to navigate through a risky and unhealthy environment.
According to Santha, a resident and daily commuter, the situation has only worsened due to a broken drainage system. "Due to the drainage break, sewage water enters the road, making it very difficult to cross. At times, speedy vehicles splash the dirty water on passersby, which is very unpleasant. It’s also a serious health hazard," she warned, urging authorities to take immediate action.
The residents, including parents and teachers, have repeatedly complained to local authorities, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. The affected stretch is a crucial route leading to various schools, compelling students to brave unhygienic conditions daily. The lack of response from officials has sparked concerns over the health risks faced by children.
Ironically, the area is home to several VIP residences, including those of senior government officials and politicians. However, since they travel by vehicles, they are not exposed to the same hardships as ordinary pedestrians. The overhaul of the drainage system has been pending for over a year, leaving residents to suffer in silence.
With no end in sight to the crisis, residents are left wondering when their pleas will be heard and action taken to address this pressing issue. As the situation continues to deteriorate, it remains to be seen whether local authorities will finally take concrete steps to rectify the problem and bring relief to the residents of Lumsey.
