Nagaland Assembly Clears Historic 24,699-Crore Budget, Aims to Fuel State’s Growth
Nagaland’s Budget for 2025-26 Approves Significant Developments, Empowering Youth and Fostering Progress
The Nagaland Legislative Assembly concluded its session on Saturday, approving a budget of Rs. 24,699.83 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The move marks a significant step forward for the state, with various development-focused initiatives aimed at boosting the economy, empowering the youth, and preserving culture.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who also holds the finance portfolio, presented the budget earlier this week. The assembly approved grants for 82 departments, as well as the Nagaland Appropriation (No. 3) Bill 2025, authorising the withdrawal of funds from the state’s consolidated fund for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
The budget features several transformative initiatives, including the Skill Mission, designed to train 5,000 youth for self-employment and private-sector opportunities, particularly in emerging industries. Additionally, the Living Morung Initiative will work to preserve Naga culture, while the Solar Power Mission will address energy deficits. The state will also establish a Drone Training Centre to equip youth with job-linked skills in drone technology.
Infrastructure and governance improvements are also at the forefront, with measures such as expanding banking access in unbanked blocks, launching a Chief Minister’s Fellowship Programme to cultivate future leaders, and introducing a fleet of 40 buses to enhance transportation. The state is also committed to fast-tracking development in interstate border areas.
NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer commended the budget, describing it as “one of the most holistic and transformative” in recent years. He praised Chief Minister Rio and his team for their commitment to addressing the state’s challenges and fostering progress. “This budget reflects a resurgent and transformed Nagaland,” Longkumer said.
The approved budget is expected to set the stage for economic growth, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation in the state, ushering in a new era of development for Nagaland. The announcement of various financial and non-financial committees for 2025-26 marked the conclusion of the assembly, with the budget expected to have a significant impact on the state’s future.
