Unbelievable Crackdown: 93 Arrested in Just 11 Days Amid Intense Vehicle Checks in Mayiladuthurai
In a concerted effort to dismantle illegal liquor operations, the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of Mayiladuthurai district undertook an extensive crackdown, resulting in the arrest of 93 individuals over an 11-day operation. This intensified scrutiny follows a directive from Superintendent of Police K. Stalin, who mandated stricter vehicle checks across the district to thwart the transportation and sales of illegal alcohol.
Under the vigilant supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M. Sundaresan, enforcement inspectors Annai Abirami and Jaya spearheaded rigorous inspections between February 23 and March 5. Checkpoints at strategic locations including Nandalur, Nalladai, Ayyappadi, and Kollidam Aanaikaran Chathiram were manned by the inspecting teams. During this period, authorities registered 83 cases, highlighting a significant uptick in illegal activity within the region.
The operation’s haul included the confiscation of 450 bottles of liquor illicitly transported from Puducherry and an additional 300 bottles of illicit arrack, underscoring the operation’s effectiveness in curbing the flow of illegal intoxicants. Reflecting on the operation, a PEW official emphasized the importance of sustaining these safety measures: “Continuous vigilance at our district’s entry points is crucial to curb illegal liquor influx.”
All individuals apprehended during the crackdown were presented before the judicial system. While the majority received bail, 10 individuals were deemed central figures in more severe smuggling operations and were thus denied bail, facing incarceration. Those identified involve Prabhakaran, 40, from Sirkazhi Eesaniya Street; Balamurugan, 31, from Poompuhar; and Panneerselvam, 65, of Mandhai Annavasal. Their counterparts include Balasubramanian, 26, and Palaniselvam, 48, both hailing from Tharangambadi, in addition to Jeeva, 60, from Thiruvilandur. Completing the list of principal offenders are Ayyappan, 39, from Radhanallur in Sirkazhi; Mani, 54, from Ananthamangalam; Marimuthu, 53, from Puthur; and Nagarajan, 65, from Melappanayur.
The district’s enforcement agencies, under relentless pressure to neutralize these underground networks, have continually adopted robust strategies. Superintendent K. Stalin remarked on the operational success, stating, “Our objective remains the eradication of unlawful trade networks, ensuring community safety and legitimate commerce.”
This targeted endeavor forms part of a broader regional strategy designed to cleanse the area of its notorious history of liquor smuggling, which has often plagued the local economy and compromised community health.
