Mannat Brar Makes History at WAAP Championships, Equaling Indian Record with Scintillating 67
Indian golfer Mannat Brar has made a remarkable start at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Golf (WAAP) Championships, equaling the best round by an Indian with a four-under 67 on the first day of the tournament. This achievement is a testament to her growing reputation on the international golfing scene.
Brar, making her fourth appearance at the WAAP Championships, was the standout performer among the six Indian golfers in the fray, finishing the day in a tie for ninth position. She trails leader Seo-Jin Park of South Korea by four shots, who shot a stunning 64 to take the top spot. Brar, along with An Le Chuc of Vietnam, Eunseo Choi of New Zealand, and Jie-En Lin of Chinese Taipei, is tied for ninth.
The top 50 and ties will make the cut after the second round, ensuring that Brar will have another chance to shine in the days to come. The Indian golfer’s performance is all the more impressive given the challenging conditions at the picturesque Par-71 Hoiana Shores course, which is hosting its first major international event.
Brar’s 67 score is not only the best by an Indian at this tournament but also equalled the best round by an Indian in any WAAP Championship, a record previously held by Anika Varma, who shot 68 in 2021. Another Indian golfer, Avani Prashanth, also achieved the same score in 2024.
The Indian golfers will need to regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead, with Saanvi Somu and Guntas Kaur Sandhu struggling on the first day, finishing at 1-over and 2-over, respectively. Heena Kang, Zara Anand, and Kashika Misra will have to gather their momentum if they hope to make the cut.
The withdrawal of favorite Rianne Malixi due to a back strain has opened up the competition, and golf enthusiasts will be eagerly watching the developments in the coming days. With Brar’s exceptional start, India will be hoping for more surprises from their golfers as the tournament unfolds.
