Sparing the Forest: Conrad’s Commitment to Preserving Natural Landscapes
Government Defends Plan to Convert Forest Land to Industrial Estate in Byrnihat
MEGHALAYA – Amidst opposition claims of compromising environmental concerns, the Meghalaya government has cleared the air on the plan to convert 137 acres of land in Byrnihat into an industrial estate, assuring that the land in question is not legally classified as forest area. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who is also the head of the Forest and Environment Department, clarified that the land is underutilized and will be transferred from the Soil Conservation and Horticulture departments to the government, which will in turn provide another plot of land as compensation.
The opposition, led by Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma, had objected to the proposal, questioning the government’s intentions to bypass environmental concerns and flout laws. However, the chief minister emphasized that the government will conduct an environmental assessment for any future projects, citing the ongoing process of transferring land. "We desire to use it in a better manner. In whatever scenario we move ahead, all provisions of law in terms of environmental aspects, growing of trees, etc. which needs to be done will be done," Sangma said.
The government’s plan apparently aims to attract investors to the region, with bookings already received from companies willing to invest Rs 300 crore for a large bottling plant and Rs 700 crore for a bamboo processing unit. The latter has reportedly faced challenges, leading the government to consider relocating the project to Tikrikilla. Additionally, a pharmaceutical company has expressed interest in setting up a facility on the proposed land, generating employment opportunities and providing affordable generic medicines.
The chief minister urged people to have an open mind, understanding the larger picture of the project, and to come to the table to address concerns. "We have to find a way forward. We have to find options and solutions, and if there are challenges, we are ready to discuss and share concerns. We are continuing our effort by engaging with local leadership," he said. Sangma assured that the government will move forward with the project only with the consent of local people and leaders.
The controversy has set off alarm bells among environmentalists and local residents, who are concerned about the potential impact on the region’s ecosystem and livelihoods. While the government’s stance on the issue remains unclear, one thing is certain – the fate of the proposed industrial estate in Byrnihat hangs in the balance, pending further deliberations and possibly, reviews of environmental concerns.
