Mizoram’s Rs 17.69 Crore Investment in Road Construction: Empowering Rural Communities
Mizoram Government Spends Allotted Funds on Road Maintenance, Looks to Revamp Construction Methods
The Mizoram government has made the most of the 17.69 crores allocated for road maintenance funds during the 2024-25 financial year, with Minister for Public Works Department (PWD), Vanlalhlana, announcing that the funds have been fully utilized. The minister revealed that the cost of building a single kilometer of road varies depending on factors such as the road’s specifications and condition, with the state PWD allocating a standard rate of Rs 49,300 per kilometer.
In an address to the Assembly, Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted the state government’s shift towards a new method of road construction, which involves adopting a rigid pavement, more commonly known as bituminous concrete system. This method allows for the construction of roads that can last up to 20 years, but it is more expensive than traditional construction methods. The Chief Minister clarified that where the paver cannot be used, roads would, therefore, have to be built using the traditional method.
To further revamp its road infrastructure, the Mizoram government has requested the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to construct all roads in the state using the rigid pavement system. This move was made keeping in mind the benefits of such a system, including its durability and capacity to handle heavy traffic.
Since the budget for road construction has been exhausted, the state government has no other option but to rely on the MoRTH for assistance, which is a significant development in the state’s infrastructure efforts. The move is also seen as a step towards modernizing the state’s road construction processes and ensuring the longevity and safety of its road network.
