Citizenship for Sale: Get Visa-Free Travel for Just Rs 91 Lakh, But Why Would You Want It?
As the world grapples with the pressing issue of climate change, a tiny Pacific island nation, Nauru, has taken an extraordinary step to secure its future. The country is now offering citizenship to foreigners, with a minimum investment of $105,000, in an effort to raise funds for its climate resilience initiative. The ambitious plan aims to relocate 90% of Nauru’s 12,500 inhabitants to higher ground and build a new community, as the island’s very existence is threatened by rising sea levels, storm surges, and coastal erosion.
Nauru, one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, is in dire need of a proactive approach to address the crisis. President David Adeang emphasized the importance of taking immediate action to ensure the nation’s future, stating, “While the world debates climate action, we must take proactive steps to secure our nation’s future.” The country’s history of coastal erosion and devastating king tides has already claimed homes and displaced many residents, as Tyrone Deiye, a Nauruan researcher at Monash Business School, highlighted: “A lot of people residing on the coast have already lost land – some have had their entire houses engulfed by king tides, and they have lost everything.”
The concept of a “golden passport” has been criticized in the past, but for developing nations struggling to secure climate funds, such initiatives offer a lifeline. Associate Professor Kirstin Surak of the London School of Economics believes that these programs can provide “global lives” for those with restricted passports, as a Nauru passport grants visa-free access to 89 countries, including the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. The government expects to generate $5.6 million in its first year from the program, scaling up to around $42 million annually, contributing 19% of total government revenue.
To ensure the program’s success, the government has partnered with international organizations, such as the World Bank, to provide expertise and oversight. The program will be implemented cautiously, with stringent vetting procedures to exclude individuals from countries designated as high-risk by the United Nations, including Russia and North Korea. Nauru is not the first nation to offer citizenship-by-investment, as Dominica has been operating a similar program since 1993, with some proceeds being used to fund its goal of becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation by 2030.
As the tide of climate change continues to rise, Nauru’s bold move has sparked both excitement and concern. While the potential benefits of this initiative are significant, critics argue that the program may be exploited, as it has been in the past. Nonetheless, Nauru’s determination to secure its future is a testament to the urgency of climate action, and its initiative may serve as a model for other vulnerable nations to follow.
