Kuki Group Stands Firm: “No Talks Without Autonomous Governance” – A New Path Forward
In the midst of growing tensions in the North East region, an antigovernment organization, the Village Volunteers – Eastern Zone, has issued a stern warning to potential intruders: enter their territories at your own risk.
The organization, which represents the Kuki people, is no longer willing to tolerate outsiders entering their land without addressing their long-standing demand for a separate Union Territory with a legislature. In a statement issued on March 5, the Village Volunteers categorically stated that there will be no free movement in Kuki territories until justice is served and their demands are met. The group is refusing to budge, emphasizing that any attempts to bypass their demands will be met with severe consequences.
Their warning comes ahead of an upcoming peace march planned for March 8 by the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), a valley-based civil organization. The Kuki people are vehemently opposing these marches, which they view as mere window-dressing, intended to conceal the ugly truth of their decades-long marginalization, inhuman atrocities, and systemic oppression. “Our demand for a Separate Administration is not just a political aspiration – it is a necessity for our survival, security, and dignity,” the statement reads.
The Village Volunteers have also called upon the international community and human rights organizations to take note of the Kuki people’s struggles, emphasizing that any attempt to downplay their plight or sympathy misplaced. They condemn the indifference and apathy surrounding their plight, recalling the injustices suffered by the community. “No Free Movement before Separate Administration! Justice and Security for the Kuki People!” they reiterated, reiterating their slogan.
The situation has even grabbed the attention of the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, who recently instructed security forces to ensure the free movement of people across all routes in the state from March 8. However, the Village Volunteers are skeptical, believing that such measures will only pave the way for further exploitation and oppression.
As tensions escalate, the international community is watching with increasing concern. The Village Volunteers’ stance is clear: no movement will be tolerated without addressing their long-standing demands for a separate governing structure. The question now is: will their warnings be heeded, or will the Kuki people continue to face isolation and marginalization? Only time will unfold the next chapter in this high-stakes drama, where survival, security, and dignity hang precariously in the balance.
