India Launches Initiative to Combat Microplastic Contamination in Food and Drinking Water

India is taking a critical step to address the growing concern of microplastic contamination in food and packaged drinking water. The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a project to tackle the issue, which was announced by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly during the recent Budget Session. According to the minister, the project, which began on August 18, 2024, aims to establish validated methodologies and determine the prevalence of micro and nanoplastics in various food matrices.

The project’s primary objective is to develop a standard for testing microplastics, a significant step in addressing the lack of regulations in this area. The initiative also includes sampling and testing of packaged drinking water for various contaminants, including mineral oil, metal, pesticide residues, and microbiological parameters, but currently, microplastics are not checked.

Minister Lyngdoh clarified that the State Government has been collecting packaged drinking water samples to test for said contaminants, excluding microplastics. The development of a standard for testing microplastics is essential, as the presence of these tiny plastics in food and drink can pose serious health risks. Microplastics have been linked to various health issues, including cancer, neurotoxicity, and reproductive problems.

This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and quality of India’s food and drink industry. As consumers become increasingly aware of the risks associated with microplastic contamination, it is crucial that the government and regulatory bodies take proactive measures to address the issue.
