Can Delhi’s BJP Spearhead Victory in the Long-Running Battle to Revive Yamuna’s Glory?
The Yamuna River, a sacred and revered body of water in Hinduism, has long been plagued by pollution. Despite being a vital tributary of India, it’s alarming to note that the stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi, merely 1.8% of its total length, accounts for a staggering 80% of the river’s pollution. This has been a persistent issue, with previous administrations, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), failing to deliver on their promises to clean the river.
The recent change in government saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) come to power, with a promise to restore the Yamuna to its former glory. The party’s election manifesto, “Viksit Bharat Sankalp Patra”, pledged to establish a “Yamuna Kosh” for revitalization and a riverfront development project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “I had promised during the election campaign that we will make Yamunaji the identity of Delhi city. I know this work is difficult and will take a long time. No matter how much time is spent or how much energy is used, we will make every effort to serve the Yamuna.”
To demonstrate its commitment, the BJP held a Yamuna Aarti before the first cabinet meeting, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta identifying the cleaning of the Yamuna as a top priority in her first 100 days in office. The party’s leaders and ministers have repeatedly emphasized their dedication to the task, with several promising a thorough cleanup process within the next three years, with a deadline of December 2027.
According to sources, the cleanup process will be divided into three to four stages, with the first phase focusing on removing solid waste, which has already begun at sites such as the Chhath Ghat at ITO. The divide between the party’s promises and the reality of the situation is stark, with many wondering whether the BJP can succeed where its predecessors have failed.
As the party’s National Spokesperson Tuhin Sinha notes, “Cleaning the Yamuna is a commitment for us. The very reason Yamuna Aarti has been initiated is to reinforce our commitment and remind ourselves that no matter how challenging the task, we must achieve it.” Time will tell if the BJP’s words are matched by action, as the world watches to see if this administration can finally restore the Yamuna to its former glory.
