Infosys Introduces Stringent New Attendance Policy, Limiting Work-From-Home Options for Most Employees
Indian software giant Infosys has revealed a new attendance policy for its technology staff, requiring them to work from the office for at least 10 days a month starting March 10, 2025. The move is part of the company’s hybrid work model, which aims to balance team collaboration with employee flexibility.
Under the new policy, employees at Job Level 5 (JL5) and below, including team leaders, software engineers, senior engineers, system engineers, and consultants, must be present at their designated office locations for at least 10 days a month. The policy also includes a system-driven compliance system, where employees can track their attendance through a mobile application. Work-from-home requests will no longer be automatically approved, and failure to meet the attendance requirement by one or two days may result in deductions from an employee’s leave allocation.
The mandate does not apply to managers and staff at Job Level 6 and above, who are currently exempt from this rule. Department heads have instructed their teams to limit work-from-home requests starting March 10, citing project needs as the primary driver for the mandate.
The decision to implement this policy is seen as a response to various factors, including economic challenges, concerns over employee moonlighting, and efforts to strengthen workplace culture post-pandemic. The move comes as other tech firms are also adopting hybrid or office-based work arrangements, including TCS, which has linked variable compensation to adherence to a five-day office attendance policy, with 30 days of remote work allowed annually.
Infosys’ hybrid work model, which was introduced in November 2023, encourages employees to return to offices with quarterly “in-person collaboration” weeks, requiring full team attendance for group activities. However, the company’s decision to implement stricter attendance policies indicates a shift towards a more traditional work setup, which may have far-reaching implications for employees. As the tech industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how other companies respond to the changing landscape and the new challenges it poses.
