Delhi Conducts Fair and Transparent Draw for EWS and DG Category Admissions in Private Schools
The Delhi government has successfully conducted a transparent and fair draw of lots for admission under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) categories in private schools, with over 2.5 lakh applications received for 42,000 seats. This is the first time the draw has been conducted publicly, with multiple screens installed at the venue for parents to witness the process in real-time.
The draw, which was carried out in the presence of Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, involved two children, Bhavesh and Bhavika, initiating the draw for KG and Class 1, and Nursery classes, respectively. The high-stakes process saw 24,933 seats available for Nursery classes in 1,299 schools, 4,682 seats for Kindergarten (KG) in 622 schools, and 14,430 seats for Class 1 in 1,213 schools.
The selected students will receive a message by evening, announcing their admission, and will be called to the Directorate of Education (DoE) office for document verification. Sood emphasized that once the documents are verified and approved, schools cannot deny admission on the basis of any document-related issues. “We have introduced multiple safeguards to ensure the process remains fair, including a redraw option in case of objections, strict restrictions on cell phone usage, and complete video surveillance,” he said.
The minister also highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that “every child deserves an equal chance at quality education.” The new EWS category has been expanded to include students from an annual income limit of Rs 5 lakh, allowing more children from underprivileged backgrounds to benefit from quality schooling.
In a significant development, Sood announced that the registration period for children with special needs, transgender students, and other categories has been extended. The Delhi government’s efforts have received widespread acclaim, with many experts hailing the move as a major step towards ensuring access to quality education for all. With this transparent and fair process, the Delhi government has set an example for other states to follow in ensuring that every child has an equal opportunity to learn and grow.
