Guwahati’s Fiscal March: 50,000 Property Owners Face Deadline to Pay Up or Face Consequences
Guwahati’s Property Owners and Businesses on Notice: Pay Up or Face Consequences
In a stern warning, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania has given property owners and businesses until the end of March to clear their outstanding dues, as the civic body struggles to meet its tax collection targets. As of now, GMC has collected a mere 82 crore from 1.1 lakh households, leaving a significant shortage of 48 crore in the current financial year’s budget.
The mayor emphasized the need for timely payments, stating that late payers will face increased penalties, from 10% to 20% of the total amount owed. “We have gone to great lengths to simplify the payment process, providing online applications and door-to-door collection. Those who clear their dues on time will receive a 10% rebate in April, while payments made in May will get a 5% discount,” he emphasized.
The warning extends to business owners as well, with the mayor revealing that GMC has collected merely 27 crore from trade licenses, and urging shops to obtain or renew their licenses to avoid severe consequences. “We have streamlined the application process, making it accessible online. Any shop that fails to obtain or renew its license by May will be sealed starting in June,” the mayor said, adding that even warehouses and godowns now require licenses.
The mayor also addressed the city’s long-standing drainage issues, announcing that over 400 drainage projects, including the cleaning of five rivers, have been tendered. Work on the Mission Flood Free project is set to begin on March 15, and the mayor warned against unauthorized drain blockages. “We will conduct regular inspections, and stern action will be taken against those who obstruct or cover drains, as this leads to severe waterlogging. We will utilize advanced equipment to clean major areas like GS Road and other major stretches,” he warned.
The warning from the GMC is clear: tax and license defaulters must take immediate action to avoid penalties and contribute to the city’s development. The mayor’s appeal is simple: “Pay up promptly, and let us work together to build a better Guwahati.”
