Exciting Nightlife Boom: D.K. Shivakumar’s Vision to Ignite Mangaluru and Coastal Towns
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has highlighted the lack of nighttime public transport and entertainment options in Mangaluru, contrasting it with the vibrant nightlife of cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai. He noted that most bus services cease by 8 p.m., causing inconvenience to commuters and leaving the city devoid of activities post-7 p.m. The Deputy CM emphasized Mangaluru’s untapped tourism potential, suggesting that increasing nighttime entertainment could attract the youth and boost tourism. A special meeting involving coastal legislators is planned to discuss promoting evening activities and tourism in the region.
Tourism Minister H. K. Patil pointed out that roughly eight crore people visit the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada annually, many for temple tours and educational purposes. To enhance tourism, the government has proposed 40 tourism nodes between Karwar and Mangaluru, encouraging private investment and development. Concerns were raised about insufficient street lighting on Maravanthe beach and the need for regulatory changes to facilitate tourism growth, echoing recent adaptations in Goa and Maharashtra. Furthermore, there are calls to diversify tourism in the region by promoting the Western Ghats’ natural attractions.
