Securing Borders, Shielding Lives: CM Sangma’s Assurance for Meghalaya-Assam Villagers
Shillong, March 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the remaining six disputed border areas. In response to a motion raised by UDP legislator Mayral Born Syiem in the Assembly, Sangma urged villagers to stay vigilant and alert him directly to any situation requiring immediate intervention.
“The security of our people is our top priority,” Sangma emphasized, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by residents in these border areas. “Whenever a situation arises, we will act to ensure the protection and safety of our people.” He noted that his government had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resolve six areas of contention, with the Tarabari sector recently settled through the will of the people.
Sangma underlined the importance of dialogue in resolving complex issues, citing the example of the Tarabari sector, where Assam’s claim was withdrawn after local villages opted to remain part of Meghalaya. “These are complex issues, but only through dialogue can we find lasting solutions,” he stressed. The Chief Minister also urged legislators to inform him of any delays in the construction of border police outposts, intended to enhance security and the presence of law enforcement in disputed areas.
The Meghalaya government has already established seven new border outposts across four districts, including Rani-Jirang in Ri Bhoi district, Langpih, Lejadubi, and Umwali in West Khasi Hills district, Mooriap in East Jaintia Hills, and Tihwieh and Mukroh in West Jaintia Hills. This ongoing dialogue follows the signing of the MoU in March 2022, which settled six of the 12 disputed border areas.
Sangma’s commitment to resolving the remaining issues was unwavering, and he assured residents that his government would continue to work towards a lasting peace. “We will do whatever it takes to ensure the protection and safety of our people,” he declared. As the State progresses towards finding a lasting solution, the implementation of these measures will be closely monitored and reported on.
