Chief Minister Meghalaya Calls for Crisis Hotline to Bridge Border Parliamentarians in Quest for Peace
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Urges Legislators to Directly Reach Out on Border Issues
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, has emphasized the importance of direct communication between lawmakers representing border areas and his administration. Speaking in the Meghalaya Assembly, Sangma assured that his government is committed to safeguarding the lives of residents in sensitive border regions.
Sangma emphasized that the MLA’s have a direct hotline to him, and he will personally ensure the protection of people in border areas in case of any untoward incidents. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges but reiterated his administration’s resolve to address the issues and maintain peace in the region. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has taken bold steps to engage in dialogue on contentious border issues, differing from previous administrations.
The successful resolution of the Tarabari sector dispute, where the will of the people was prioritized, has been cited as an example of the government’s commitment to addressing border issues. Sangma also expressed concern over the alleged use of force by Assam in certain border areas, describing it as a persistent challenge that has lingered for over 53 years.
In his address, Sangma assured the Assembly that the government is working on providing infrastructure, including road connectivity and essential services, to residents in areas where border disputes have been resolved. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the remaining border disputes with Assam, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resolve six areas of differences. The Chief Minister credited the MoU as a crucial step towards resolving the complex issue and ensuring peace in the region.
The Meghalaya government’s efforts to engage with state and central authorities to find solutions to the border disputes have been praised by many, with some hailing it as a significant step towards resolving decades-old issues. Sangma’s commitment to protecting the lives of those living in border areas has also been applauded, with many praising his emphasis on direct communication and addressing the concerns of lawmakers representing the region.
