Sikkim Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan: A Celebration of Art and Culture in Namchi
The second edition of Sikkim Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan, a two-day cultural extravaganza, kicked off on Monday at the Town Hall in Namchi, Sikkim. The event, which brings together artists from across the state, aims to promote and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Sikkim. This year’s edition saw over 900 artists participating, making it a truly inclusive and vibrant celebration of art and culture.
The event was graced by prominent guests, including Culture Minister G.T. Dhungel, who was the chief guest on the opening day. Other notable guests included Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, MLAs Sanjeet Kharel, Madan Cintury, Satish Chandra Rai, and Krishna Kumari Rai, as well as former MLA and current Cultural Department OSD Bhawani Ghimire.
The first day of the event featured a range of performances, including a special appearance by playback singer Sairaj Khati and Nritya-Shreya, a renowned Nepali dance troupe. Additionally, eight artists from different art forms shared their experiences, highlighting the importance of infrastructure improvements, music education in schools, and international music workshops. They also touched upon the potential of fine arts as a career option, the role of the film industry in supporting various art forms, and the need for beauty pageants, industry challenges, and solutions.
A panel discussion was also held, moderated by Sanjay Rai from Voice NGO, which brought together Prashant Rasaily, Reeyaj Sangitalaya, and Bhawani Ghimire. The discussion covered topics such as streamlining the artist community, the impact of concerts and festivals on tourism, and the role of the Culture department. Filmmaker Ugen Chopel Bhutia also shared valuable insights on various aspects of filmmaking.
In his address, Minister Dhungel emphasized the importance of work culture, kindness, and continuous learning in the arts. He stressed that art should remain contemporary and relevant to society. The event is organized by Voice NGO, supported by the SKM cultural wing, and is set to conclude with a performance by Takme Budo on the second day, with Chief Minister P.S. Golay as the chief guest. The felicitation and award ceremony for artists will also be a highlight of the final day.
