India’s Unavoidable Dependence on Pakistan: The Story of Sendha Salt (Rock Salt)

India’s reliance on Pakistan for an essential household staple has been a long-standing reality. Sendha salt, also known as rock salt, is a crucial component in Indian households, with over 80% of households using it. This may come as a surprise, but the fact is that India’s demand for Sendha salt is met almost entirely by imports from Pakistan.

A Tale of Two Countries

The trade relationship between India and Pakistan has been steady since the partition, with a significant decrease in imports from Pakistan in recent years. However, there are some critical products that continue to be sourced from the neighboring country. Sendha salt is one such product, with India being entirely dependent on Pakistan for its supply.

The Dark Horses of the Salt Trade

Rock salt is not produced in India, making it essential to rely on foreign imports. Interestingly, Pakistan’s Khewra mine in Jhelum district’s Punjab province is the second-largest salt mine in the world, producing around 450,000 tons of Sendha salt every year. This immense production capacity is enough to last for 450 years, according to estimates.

The Price Difference

The price difference between Pakistani and Indian rock salt is substantial. In Pakistan, Sendha salt costs between 2-3 rupees per kilogram, while in India, it fetches a premium price of 50-60 rupees per kilogram. This significant price difference has led to a reduction in India’s dependence on Pakistan, with India now sourcing rock salt from other countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Malaysia, Germany, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Australia.

Ayurveda’s Take on Rock Salt

In Ayurveda, rock salt is revered for its health benefits. It is believed to eliminate stomach problems, improve oral health, and even enhance hair growth. Experts recommend consuming rock salt not just during fasting festivals but every day. Its uses are numerous, making it an essential component in many Indian households.

A Growing Demand

India’s demand for rock salt is estimated to be met almost entirely from Pakistan, with 99.7% of India’s total rock salt imports coming from the neighbor in 2018-19. While India has reduced its reliance on Pakistan, the country’s dependence on foreign imports is still significant. With more than 80% of Indian households using rock salt, the demand is substantial, and the need for alternative sources is palpable.

The Verdict

India’s reliance on Pakistan for Sendha salt (rock salt) is a crucial aspect of their bilateral trade. While the country has reduced its dependence on Pakistan, the demand for this essential household product remains strong. With its numerous health benefits and widespread use, rock salt is an integral part of Indian culture and daily life.
