Rabha’s Legacy Abounds: Art and Nature Entwine at Nagaon’s Vibrant Theatre Fest
Shukracharya’s Vision Lives On: Theatre Festival in Nagaon Celebrates Art and Conservation Amid Nature
In the heart of Assam’s Nagaon district, a unique theatre festival, Rodghai Bebejia Natural Theatre Festival, has been showcasing the power of art to conserve nature and promote sustainability. The two-day festival, which concluded on Sunday, is a testament to the late maestro Shukracharya Rabha’s vision of incorporating the natural world into the performing arts.
Founded in 2016, the festival is organized by theatre enthusiast Dip Kumar Bora, who drew inspiration from Shukracharya’s concept of "Under the Sal Tree," a renowned theatre festival in Guwahati. Bora’s vision, however, goes beyond mere performances, focusing on environmental conservation, particularly tree planting and nature protection.
The festival takes place in the forest area of Bebejia village, where a simple stage is set up amidst the natural surroundings. The use of natural materials like soil and hay grass to create the stage is a deliberate choice, emphasizing harmony with nature. The absence of electronic equipment means that the performances rely solely on the talent and skills of the artists.
This year’s festival featured an impressive 15 plays, including "Bhagwan Hoihe" by Chandraprabh Theatre, "Bhabindruk" by Jagriti Theatre, and "Wari Wari Tai In Telejung" by Bishwakarma Chanupriya. The event not only provided a platform for local artists but also fostered a sense of community, with the rural setting and lush greenery serving as a tranquil backdrop for the performances.
The importance of reviving traditional theatre in today’s fast-paced digital age cannot be understated, according to Bora. "Theatre is a powerful medium for expression, enabling artists to convey emotions, narratives, and societal reflections of a culture through performances. It’s crucial for the younger generation to experience it firsthand, as it helps them connect with and learn about their heritage."
By combining art and nature, the Rodghai Bebejia Natural Theatre Festival is breaking new ground, demonstrating that environmental conservation and cultural expression can coexist and complement each other. As Shukracharya’s vision lives on, it’s heartening to see the next generation of artists and environmentalists working together to preserve the beauty of nature and the beauty of art.
