Bhutan’s Railway Dream Takes Shape with Kokrajhar-Gelephu Line
A historic milestone has been achieved in the development of Bhutan’s railway network as Indian Railways finalizes the detailed project report (DPR) for the long-awaited Kokrajhar-Gelephu railway link. The 69.04 km track will connect Assam’s Kokrajhar station to Gelephu in Bhutan, marking a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Key Highlights of the Project
- The estimated cost of the project is ₹3,500 crore
- The 69.04 km track will feature six new stations and 29 major bridges
- The infrastructure plan includes two key bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road overbridge, 39 road underbridges, and two viaducts measuring 11 meters in length
- The project is expected to facilitate seamless transportation and improve connectivity between Assam and Bhutan
According to a spokesperson for the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the final location survey has been completed, and the DPR is awaiting approval. The project is a crucial step in implementing the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Act East Policy’ and ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’.
A Game-Changer for Trade and Tourism
The proposed railway line will significantly enhance trade and tourism between Assam and Bhutan, positioning the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) as a key trade and transit hub. "The project will also improve connectivity, facilitating seamless transportation and giving Bhutan its first-ever railway link," said the NFR spokesperson.
The new railway line is expected to benefit local businesses and communities, generating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. With its completion, Assam and Bhutan will be better connected, fostering stronger ties and cementing their friendship.
What’s Next?
The project now awaits final approval, following which construction is expected to commence. The Indian Railways will work closely with the governments of Assam and Bhutan to ensure a successful implementation of the project.
